Is this good enough for structured light scanning?

Found an old BenQ W1070 projector and thinking of using it for structured light 3d scanning. Before I start buying cameras and software, I want to be sure it'll work. Does anyone have experience using projectors for this and know what specs matter most?
 
I'm pretty sure it will do the job for structured light scanning. It's 1080p and has pretty good brightness at 2000 lumens.Plus it can go up to 120Hz which is great for projecting patterns. Just make sure you have enough space for the throw ratio of 1.15 to 1.5. If you pair it with a solid high-speed camera and some good software you'll be all set

Thanks for the breakdown! Hearing those specs, such as 1080p and 120Hz, confirmed for structured light is a breath of fresh air. This old projector is a diamond in the rough for what I have in mind.

I agreee. The BenQ W1070 can work for structured light scanning if it's bright enough and has good resolution to show clear patterns. Low input lag and decent color accuracy help too. Its a solid budget choice , but definitely test it with your cameras and software before diving in.

Thanks for highlighting input lag and color accuracy as other important factors. I have been researching high-speed cameras for the last month to pair with it.

Do you have a reco for a camera model that works well with a DLP projector like the W1070 for this type of scanning?

I would go with not the largest megapixel number you'll find because you won't need it, because it will introduce some noise. What you do want is a camera with a large sensor. A friend of mine had an IDS Imaging, not sure about a specific model, but I do remember it was 5 megapixels.
 
Thanks for following along with this thread. I've learned a lot so far. Your advice about not going for higher megapixels if it just adds noise really helped. I looked into IDS Imaging and saw that the Ensenso B series and some uEye models have 5MP sensors with good frame rates. Right now, I'm considering a Sony IMX265 or IMX273 sensor because they seem to offer a good mix of resolution and speed for structured light.
