Hardware setup recommendation

My parents bought me a 3D printer I've always wanted on Christmas, and I've been thinking about starting a 3D printing business. I think a scanner will be a good idea to level up the business.

Could you throw some pointers my way on the hardware side of things? My bread and butter is to scanning car and motorcycle parts, say from about 4x4 inches up to roughly 20x20 inches, with decent accuracy.

I'm looking to shell out around $2000 max (not counting the David software).
Could you guys recommend a winning combo of camera (industrial? CCD/CMOS? rolling or global shutter?), camera lens, projector (short throw projector lenses maybe?)

For that kind of cash, what setup would give me the most bang for my buck in terms of quality?

I'd like to hear advice from the experienced people here. TIA
 
For $2K, go with a structured light setup. Global shutter CMOS cam (1.3–2MP), 12–16mm lens, and a short throw DLP like the Optoma ML750ST.

honestly, $2K is a tight budget. For scanning car/motorcycle parts in that size range (hardware only), you're definitely looking at a DIY structured light setup
The key is global shutter CMOS cameras, you can check out Basler or FLIR models, which are gold, often found used to save cash. And definitely a DLP projector for clean patterns. You can get serious bang for your buck by piecing it together
 
If you're trying to keep costs down, you can get a CMOS global shutter camera, match it with a 12–16mm low-distortion lens, and hook it up to a short-throw DLP projector for less than two grand. This setup should give you some pretty good, spot-on scans of medium-sized car parts.
